brittany out of control and tired of the media following her around. who cares!
are these two really that important! I think the media has truley forgotten the boundries of peoples private lives. I am surprised we haven’t reported how may times they go to the bathroom. It is just nonense.
Less being reported on state of affairs for the united states, terrorism, war in iraq, dick chaney still vice president after the cia outting. do we really think reporting on the two people should take front page of the newspaper, tv and internet?
[Link]The Digital Tinkerer's Blog: KIVA - A MUST READ
Hey gang, before we break for the summer I want to talk to you about a website/project that I have been meaning to profile for a long time. I am talking about KIVA (http://www.kiva.org/). It is social networking applied to microcredit. You go to their website you pick a project, you loan a small sum to someone in a developing country and make a WORLD of a difference in their lives. It is microcredit with a face. You know the person you lend the money to, you know what they’re going to use the money for, it is a small sum of money for you but a fortune to them and if you don’t get your money back (which hasn’t happened so far) it is no big loss.
For the price of a few lattes (that won’t go to your waistline) you can make a big difference in a person’s life and in a community.
If you want to find out more about it, check this website where you’ll get all the information you need :

[Link]Hulls' Mystical Blog: Know Your Credit Score!
My wife and I were sitting on the couch last Saturday afternoon watching the QVC network of all things. Financial wiz Suzie Orman, who has a wonderful weekly show pertaining to finance on CNBC was pushing one of her products dubbed ”The FICO kit” Platinum version.
www.QVC.com Item Number E03137
The kit provides the user with access to all three of their Credit Bureau Reports as well as their FICO scores, which are the scores that 90% of all lending institutions use in order to qualify people for loans (vehicles, Real estate, etc) . Its a wealth of information that also provides insight into one’s personal debt and coaching in order to clear things up.
I’ve always frowned upon our educational system for not teaching financial basics at various levels of the educational process. So many americans are in debt because we weren’t taught the basics. Suzie’s kit is a start and for less than $50 bucks is a steal!
[Link]Hulls' Mystical Blog: Copyright & Lessig
Wikipedia states the definition of copyright as the following: a set of exclusive rights regulating the use of a particular expression of an idea or information. In his keynote speech Lessig holds no punches with regard to his ire of escalation of copyright law. The platform of his dissertation stands on his four most notable points:
- Creativity and innovation always builds on the past.
- The past always tries to control the creativity that builds upon it.
- Free societies enable the future by limiting this power of the past.
- Ours is less and less a free society.
Lessig argues for creativity to reign free without the subjugation of controls put in place by lobbyist of the old vanguard who want to protect their creative interest thereby suffocating the process in which they benefited from. I agree that there is a fundamental push to exercise control of ideas based on established elements.

This is a test to upload a photo to my blog. Here I am getting friendly with a sea lion at the New York Aquarium. I actually had brought a bunch of kids to the aquarium for a photo shoot, but when the sea lion got near them they were all terrified. I had to get “up close and personal” with him to show the kids there was nothing to be afraid of. The sea lion was more than willing to be friendly, as you can see!
laura M: plagarism
after reading our assignment this week, i wondered if there really are any new ideas. even the example of correct way to write a new assignment looked like just another way to paraphase the work with the author cited. Is it really a new idea. why is this not plagarism?
Here’s the ORIGINAL text, from page 1 of Lizzie Borden: A Case Book of Family and Crime in the 1890s by Joyce Williams et al.:
The rise of industry, the growth of cities, and the expansion of the population were the three great developments of late nineteenth century American history. As new, larger, steam-powered factories became a feature of the American landscape in the East, they transformed farm hands into industrial laborers, and provided jobs for a rising tide of immigrants. With industry came urbanization the growth of large cities (like Fall River, Massachusetts, where the Bordens lived) which became the centers of production as well as of commerce and trade.
Fall River, where the Borden family lived, was typical of northeastern industrial cities of the nineteenth century. Steam-powered production had shifted labor from agriculture to manufacturing, and as immigrants arrived in the US, they found ...

I am writing this post in support of the Virigina Tech families, my heart goes out to them at this time of great sorrow. No words can truly express what people fell in times like these and only time can reall heal.
I also would like to say that the media should really stop protraying this individual as some lost soul, he has had his 15 minutes, now it is time to concentrate on the victims and let them and their families heal.

After listening to Lawrence Lessig’s speech on copyright laws, I am SO READY for someone–anyone–to take down the Disney Empire.
Walt Disney is like a modern-day folkhero here in America. But I wonder how that would change if more people knew that he “stole” Steamboat Willie from Buster Keaton’s “Steamboat Bill.” And just to make sure nobody does to Mickey Mouse what he did to Buster Keaton, Walt keeps extending the copyright law so Mickey never falls into the public doman. No wonder the iconic symbol for the corporation is a rat.
Blogger Amanda makes a good point on Kalamazoo!
“Any kid can scribble or trace a picture of Mickey absentmindedly,” she writes. “But Andy Warhol appropriated him in his silk-screens and got sued. So what’s the difference? Are you only allowed to breach copyright laws if the appropriation speaks in favor of the subject?”
I personally think Amanda is on the right track, but the deciding factor isn’t whether or not the appropriation is favorable, it’s whether it’s PROFITABLE.
If my niece scribbled a picture of Mickey that only drew admiration from family and friends, that’s one thing. But let’s say Mickey was wearing Levis ...
[Link]Reflections: Vonage struggling after losing a patent infringement lawsuit
http://news.com.com/Vonage+tells+SE~
Bankruptcy might be an option for Vonage after being hit with the loss of a patent infringement lawsuit from Verizon.
Vonage was sued by Verizon for 5 accounts of patent infringment. The court ruled last month that Vonage violated only 3 of the infringements and Vonage has to pay 58 million dollars to Verizon for the offenses.. Futhermore, Vonage was barred from added new customers. However, Vonage’s appeal in Federal court was able to get it a temporary stay order until April 24.
There are talks about Vonage looking for a permanent solution to avoid infringing Verizon patents. However, Vonage has still not been able to come up with a work-around.
This brings about our current discussion of copyright and how it can be applied to technology. As the court case above shows that offenses of “copying” technology can be proved in the court.

My heart truly goes out to the entire state of Virginia.
However, 32 people are dying everyday in this war. The Iraq news has conveniently been routed to the 5th or 6th page of the news. Is this the media or something else?

I guess days are gone of having metal detectors in just the “bad schools”.
What happened at Virginia Tech was a tragedy. My prayers and condolences go out to the families, faculty and remaining students. May the peace of God carry you through.

The Digital Tinkerer's Blog: Lessig’s Free Culture
The Lessig Video
I found this video to be very entertaining, informative and sometimes frightening when Lessig discusses the rapid loss of creativity in our culture. You know what he is saying is true, as you see the public domain laws constantly extending the period of time it takes to acquire free rights to public properties.
If you take the example of Walt Disney, building a creative assembly line of movies based on the classic works of others, and then locking them up so no one can use them for an extended periods of time, seems unfair to myself and others — as stated in KMAP’s Blog (http://thekmap.blogspot.com) - even something as old as Steamboat Willie (the character, Mickey Mouse was based on a character in a silent movie called Steamboat Bill) which was made in 1928 won’t be in the public domain until 2023, that is if they don’t lobby congress to extend it again “. “ If I made a cheap Mickey Mouse Knock off that nobody liked, I’d either be laughed at, flamed or ignored altogether – but what if I redesigned the character and made him much cooler a more appealing ...

[Link]com110: Copyright and Free Culture
Lessig made great points on his video about Copyright. He stated four great statements “Creativity and innovation always builds on the past, The past always tries to control the creativity that builds upon it, Free societies enable the future by limiting this power of the past and Ours is less and less a free society.” It is amazing to see how the world of technology had improved. Also, how we are not aware of how the freedom of culture is being taken away from us. I think that we all have the right for free exchange of information. Free information is good and benefit everyone. I found this Blog of a lady who thought that posting original work in the Internet was a violation of the law. She was anwered that Bloggers inform the world of their opinions .Bloggers are not copyright violators.
There was this blog posted 4-15-2007 it said that his “myspace” subscription got suspended, because they received a notice from the copyright owner claiming he was infringing its rights. Now he had to go through a copyright education program. He is letting know everyone to be careful about copyright. But we need to get more educated ...

he brings up a good point ,about education. what can students use or not use, and how will they know.. kids today live on the computer. teachers are more worried about plagiarism or did the student really do the work than to worry about copywrite laws.

at least there are some politicans that believe in free internet. maybe we need to remind congress of how the has internet got started and how it florished with open access..
After watching the video, Professor Lessig, kept saying “what have you’ve done about it.” I went to cc.org website , eff website, wrote to my congressman and senators over copywrite laws. I went to Professor Lessig’s blog site, to find the different projects he is involved with. Having a site for the authors to authorize use of their material and what they would like to keep confidential is an intelligent way to handle copywrite laws problem. He has traveled extensively to prompt his software. the creative commons web site their goal is to produce a more effective high tech economy through the internet. They strongly believe in copyright and the purposes of it including making available for others to use and modify within the scope of how the creator allows it to be changed and used. They believe it is important to protect the rights of the creators however still help others in using copyrighted material. The creative commons web site is used for the ...
[Link]turtle: When will it ever end…when will people start to stand up and take responsiblity
This is an article that I just received via email. It not only angers me that people can be so insentitive or just plain ignorant, but than to pass the blame onto others as if it just doesnt matter. When do we stand up and take charge of how we will be treated, that woman should have sent that furniture back without a second thought,e specially when no one wanted to take responsiblity. That ‘mishap’ was not a mishap at all it was what has been accepted by whom ever that have been previously selling to, where it has become the norm and accepted by others.. Hopefully the link below will take you to the article. I believe all of us need to take heed to what is really happening, this kind of disregard can happen to all of us.
